Gerry Schum studied television and film production at the Deutches Institut für Film und Fernsehen (DIFF) in Munich, and at Fernsehakademie from 1961-1968. He began his career as a cameraman and filmmaker for television broadcast stations in Berlin.
Together with artist Ursula Wevers, he initiated Fernsehgalerie Gerry Schum, 1968-1970 and Videogalerie Schum, 1971-1973. He produced films and video work by John Baldessari, Joseph Beuys, Jan Dibbets, Gilbert & George, Michael Heizer, Mario Merz, Bruce Nauman, Ulrich Rückriem, Richard Serra, Keith Sonnier, Ger van Elk, Lawrence Weiner, and many others.
Schum hoped to use television as a direct artistic medium - meaning the broadcasts would be works of art, as opposed to mere reportage on the subject. He refused to include voice over commentary in his productions: "During all the 38 minutes of the Land Art show there is no word spoken. No explanation. I think an art object realized in regard of the medium TV does not need a spoken explanation."
Before his premature death in 1973, Schum accepted the position of curator for the first video art studio at the Folkwang Museum in Essen, Germany.
This important catalogue on the subject of Land Art included texts by Schum and Jean Leering on artists such as Artists include Richard Long, Barry Flanagan, Richard Oppenheim, Robert Smithson, Boezem, Dibbets, and Walter De Maria,
The book features a fold-out and many of the pages are printed on vellum.
A second, expanded, edition was released in 1970.
