Released last June in an edition of 100, Prince’s third edition with Texte Zur Kunst (a Ditone print on Hahnemühle Photo Rag) has sold out. 

"Richard Prince began appropriating fragments of contemporary visual culture at the end of the 1970s and, closely linked to the Pictures Generation, he has drawn from diverse contexts and created a multilayered oeuvre held together above all by appropriation as an artistic method. By borrowing imagery from advertising, pop culture, or other artists and making it into an element of his own work, Prince questions the mechanisms and protocols of the socioeconomic systems from which his material originated. 

For his third TEXTE ZUR KUNST edition, Prince has chosen one of his “Black Bra” works, which consists of underwear on canvas – or rather, of canvas wearing lingerie. The motif of the black bra has been a recurring one for Prince recently, including in his latest series of Instagram screenshots, the “New Portraits,” which show lightly clad influencers painting while shirtless, stripped down to their lingerie. Prince’s series highlights the “Rückenfigur” as a particularly popular pose for presenting oneself effectively on social media. Each image of the “New Portraits” is accompanied by comments – a mix of (auto)biographical and art historical notes that form an essential component of the work – posted by Joan Katz (handle joankatzz), with whom Prince supposedly founded a band called Black Bra in 1990. 

“Supposedly” because he subverts principles such as authorship and originality not only by appropriating visuals but also by playing with identities and myths, which are just as fundamental to fame in art and pop culture as iconic images. The motif of the edition “Untitled (Black Bra)” also adorns the cover of Prince’s artist’s book “New Paintings,” dedicated to the “New Portraits” and released by the artist’s Fulton Ryder imprint.”

"Since 2000 the so-called „pixel boxes“ have been the trademark of Berlin-based artist Angela Bulloch. With reference to the serial structures of Minimalism, the artist, born in Ontario/Canada in 1966, developed a sculptural module, that in ever new constellation serves as the basis for large-scale installations. Series and systems of the generation and display of colours were likewise at the centre of the two horizontal pixel box pieces: „Chains“ from 2002 which in paying tribute to artist’s artist varied and rhythmically played sequences of his permutations of colours. Cadere’s colour sequences that always involved a „systemic error“ were also a model for an early work that could thus be regarded as a precusor for the by now canonic developments in Bulloch’s oeuvre: „Mastermind Beads“ from 1998.

For Texte zur Kunst Angela Bulloch has produced a special artist’s edition entitled „AbraCadereSalubra“, 2009. It is a chain measuring 30 × 1 × 2 cm, consisting of 30 beads, that have been cast in tin after handmade models and have then been handpainted. According to two preset systems, related to Cadere and Le Corbusier, these beads have been connected on a metal string. The work comes in an edition of 40 + 10 APs. Each is accompanied by a signed and numbered certificate."

New Editors Appointed at Texte Zur Kunst

Artforum reports today that Texte Zur Kunst has announced the appointments of Philipp Ekardt as its editor-in-chief and Hanna Magauer as editor. Ekardt studied comparative literature and art history in Berlin and Paris and received his Ph.D. from Yale University. He has contributed to journals such as October, Poetica, and Frieze. Magauer received her MA from Humboldt-Universität Berlin in 2013 and has studied art history, literature, and media studies in Konstanz and Dublin.

Conceived by the trio in 1991 during the Basel Art Fair (as is indicated by the photocopy of the original drawing, made on Basilisk Hotel letterhead), the project was eventually realized as edition #31 for Texte zur Kunst magazine, seven years later. The work was intially signed on the machine-embroidered label, though these have faded over time and more recent examples have sold with the title card signed for General Idea, by surviving member AA Bronson.
