One of Daniel Lehan’s Day Pages was recently featured as the cover artwork for the November issue of the Book Arts Newsletter, No 114. Lehan has been making these intricate Day Page diary collages for many years, one each day, text typed on a manual typewriter with visuals collaged from found materials: newspapers, flyers, magazines etc., as a reflection on the day’s events, often made at the end of the evening. The featured day page was made after an artist’s book surgery with Simon Goode and myself at the London Centre for Book Arts, UK in 2017, where we advised him to start producing editions.

Lehan’s collage works start their lives as one-off works, texts and imagery are carefully cut from old medical manuals or tourist guides and intermingled with the backdrops of gardens, beaches, landscapes and cities in vintage postcard books, atlases and travel guides. 2017 has seen Lehan develop a new body of editioned books alongside his unique works which are now stocked at bookartbookshop in London. They include Wookey Hole Caves Creche populated by mystery babies, Exercises for Full Development – Knutsford which has a strict regime, and Rotterdam, where things have gone wrong.

Martha Hellion

"I noticed this book on Martha Hellion’s stand at the Small Publishers Fair at the Conway Hall in London last month. When I say noticed, it actually stopped me in my tracks, being so incredibly beautiful. I just knew that I wanted it, and then as I looked down I saw the rest of her new books and blew the rest of my money on one from her new series Field Work. Hellion has a long and respected history of artists’ books research, curation, writing, teaching and practice. 

This book, screenprinted over silver leafed paper in an edition of 30 at Taller Pablo Torrealba (tpt) in Mexico can be read in many ways. First of all, it is captivating, depicting the onset of dusk, a shimmering twilight with a detail of pink and orange tinged sky on the last page. But, typically of Hellion this book is about much more than landscape. On the reverse is a poem, translated from Spanish, originating from the Arhuaco people of Colombia.  In their spiritual beliefs, this mountain of Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is the heart of the world, and all the wellbeing, health, harmony and happiness of the rest of the world depends on it. So here is Hellion, at twilight, looking to the heavens from earth, thinking, asking, reflecting in her travels, and this immense beauty of the mountain at dusk is responsible for everything, for all of us."

To call the books pamphlets seems quite dismissive as each one is intricately designed, printed in hand set metal type, and illustrated with the artist’s woodcuts and linocuts, so they are actually rather special.

Nicholls uses “traditional ‘obsolete’ technology to print, with the content aiming for historical interest, commemorative intent and a healthy dose of humour, and distribution methods based on the values of the gift economy.”
