I discovered David Bellingham’s work in Scotland, almost twenty years ago. I first found his great book Ideas Leave Objects Standing and then a few days later saw the same phrase on a mug while visiting David Shrigley’s home (they’re old friends). 

Recently I added his watch-hands earrings to my collection of artists wristwatches.*

Earlier this week, Paul+Wendy Projects announced a new edition, their second with Bellingham. It consists of a letterpress printed die-cut cardboard box that ships flat. 

The work functions as a "cardboard vessel for the collection and storage of local air”. It comes accompanied by a signed certificate of assurance, and warranty ("this product will be repaired or replaced if it ceases to function as advertised”). 

Box Full of Air work is the 86th title produced by Paul+Wendy Projects, whose other editions include books, multiples and prints by Michael Dumontier, Marcel Dzama, Neil Farber, Maggie Groat, Kay Rosen, Micah Lexier, Van Maltese, Richard McGuire, Jonathan Monk, Roula Partheniou, David Shrigley, Derek Sullivan, and many others.

Holiday Mail

 

As one of the Christmas Cards that arrived today noted, an upshot of the lengthy Canada Post strike in November and December of last year is that the holidays are now somewhat extended. I was going to save some of these until December of next year, but I think I’ll post them this week, like the overly enthusiastic friend who wishes everyone Happy New Year well into March.

The latest addition to our modest Time Piece collection is this David Bellingham work from 2019. Seven of the below nine works are functional, and this is also, in that the piece is wearable. It consists of an hour and minute hand repurposed from watch hands, set in stirling silver stud earrings. 

It’s a nice accidental sister work to Colleen Savage’s Horological Ornithology, which frees non-cuckoo birds from cuckoo clocks (see post here).

Xmas Haul

On our final day in Ontario for the holidays our car was robbed in Niagara Falls and we lost some Xmas presents to us and from us. Luckily some things were ignored and others recovered. And there were some very nice things waiting in the mailbox when we got home. 

The above works by Jeremy Deller, Charles Kraftt, Himaa, GuyGuyGuy, David Bellingham, Jenny Slate and Cary Leibowitz will be posted properly in the coming weeks.

Published by David Bellingham's imprint WAX366, to coincide with the exhibition "Micah Lexier / Holes, Dots, Letters, Numbers, Puzzles, Envelopes, Pads of Paper" at the Glasgow School of Art Library, from May to July of 2022. 

The work references both Yoko Ono's A Hole to See the Sky Through and the event scores of George Brecht, and continues Lexier's interest in shapes and names of shapes.

Micah Lexier

Happy Birthday to Micah Lexier, who turns 61 today. 

His exhibition Names of Shapes is currently on view at Birch Contemporary, in Toronto, until December 4th. The show is accompanied by a text I wrote called A Circle Does What A Circle Does Best, alongside writings by David Bellingham and Derek McCormack.
