Fumi Nagasaka | Teenage Riot

Fumi Nagasaka
Teenage Riot
Port Colborne, Canada: Bywater Bros. Editions, 2018
80 pp., 22.7 x 16.7 cm., softcover
Edition size unknown

Taking it's title from a 1988 Sonic Youth song, Teenage Riot is Japanese photographer Fumi Nagasaka's second book, after the 2016 Kohl Editions title Untitled Youth.

The book presents a series of portraits taken over the course of several years, of four teenage girls from varying backgrounds: Maxine from the small Ontario town of Port Colborne; sisters Isabella and Alana from Brooklyn; and Fubuki, a young student from Tokyo.

Nagasaka was specifically interested in how their different upbringings were reflected in each girl’s personality and interests.

"The place they grew up in really affects who they become," she told Paige Silveria at Office Magazine. "For the girl in Canada, she’s my book publisher’s daughter. I met her at the New York book fair three years or so ago. I was surprised how different she was from her parents, who are very cultural. She really likes Kim Kardashian and had really crazy eyelashes. I thought it was so interesting that she grew up in an art environment and had such dissimilar interests from her parents. That made me want to photograph her. So, I spent some time up with them at their home in Canada. Because the town is very small, all of the information she gets is from social media and the internet. She would wear Juicy Couture pink velour tracksuits and was really into Victoria’s Secret. Every year I went back and she would change her style—it was always very different from the year before. And when she turned 16, she got her driver’s license. So I would drive around with her in the white BMW her parents gave her."

Collaborating with a subject over many years helped Nagasaka create intimate and candid images of the young women that wouldn't be possible with single-sitting portraiture.

"Photographing youth is very exciting for me as it underlines that youth is something fleeting and that we can’t keep forever. Listening to their dreams, looking at their pure expressions motivates me to capture and record moments in their lives. Youth in fact, has been the singular focus of my published works," she told NPR in 2021.

Teenage Riot is available from the publisher, for $25 CDN, here.

David Shrigley | Centre-parting

David Shrigley
Centre-parting
Toronto, Canada: Art Metropole, 1998
16 pp., 20 x 12.7 cm., staple-bound
Edition of 1000

My predecessor at Art Metropole, Roger Bywater, had a good eye for artists who were about to go from unknown to very well known. One trip to the UK, for example, led to projects with both David Shrigley and Martin Creed.

This booklet (produced as part of the Little Cockroach Press series, which also included Stan Douglas, Emma Kay, John Waters, Zoe Leonard, Sonic Youth, Linda Montano, Maurizio Nannucci, etc.) was one of the earliest publications by Shrigley, who has now produced countless book and object editions.

Initially distributed in the mail free of charge by Art Metropole, twenty-five years ago, the title is now exceedingly rare.

Richard Edson | Movie Life

Richard Edson
Movie Life
Bywater Bros. Editions, 2019
120 pp, 16 x 24.7 cm., softcover
Edition size unknown

Richard Edson was the original drummer for Sonic Youth, from 1981 to 1982. After the release of their self titled debut, he left the band to play with Konk, who remained active as part of New York’s post-punk dance scene until 1988, playing alongside bands such as Liquid Liquid, Bush Tetras, ESG, and John Lurie's Lounge Lizards.

Filmmaker Jim Jarmusch cast Edson and Lurie in his second film, Stranger Than Paradise (1984), a low budget indie that went on to win the Camera d'Or at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival as well as the 1985 National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Film. Since then Edson has appeared in over 100 films, including Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing, Wim Wenders' The Million Dollar Hotel, Oliver Stone's Platoon, and Alex Cox’s Walker.

Edited by Edson and publisher Roger Bywater, Movie Life is an inside portrait of the film industry by the veteran character actor. The black and white photographs were taken over a period of 30 years and feature portraits of famous friends and colleagues such as Willem Dafoe, Steve Buscemi, Edie Falco, Dee Dee Ramone, Ed Harris, Laurie Metcalf, Holly Hunter and John Sayles. The book features images of film production, location shoots, press junkets and promotional interviews.

“Becoming an actor was a good excuse to take photographs. The places I was went, the people I met, plus being involved in the whole machinery of film making was a subject that was too great to pass up.”
- Richard Edson, epilogue

Available for $35 from the publisher, here.

Jack Pierson | Tomorrow’s Man 4

Jack Pierson
Tomorrow’s Man 4
Port Colborne, Canada: Bywater Bros. Editions, 2017
104 pp., 25.4 x 18.4 cm., softcover
Edition size unknown

Edited and designed by Jack Pierson and Roger Bywater

"The fourth volume in Jack Pierson’s celebrated Tomorrow’s Man artist book series mixes imagery from all spectrums of the visual landscape into a single mediation on the world around us. Combining archival material together with contributions by emerging and established artists, Tomorrow’s Man 4 continues on where the earlier volumes left off. Mixed together in its signature all over design format this installment showcases historical pen and ink sketches by John Tottenham, hummingbird portraits by Brian Calvin, glazed ceramic constructions by Liz Larner, and deadpan street shots by Trevor Hernandez (better known to many by his Instagram handle Gang Culture) together with contributions by Cali Dewitt, Paul Mpagi Sepuya, Lily Stockman, Richard Tinkler, and Evan Whale.

The title, Tomorrow’s Man, comes from an infamous bodybuilding magazine from the 1950s and ‘60s. Reappropriating the publication’s title as well as its retro bodybuilding aesthetic, Pierson takes viewers on a dizzying visual journey encompassing the full spectrum of cultural references. Includes a four large fold-out posters."

Launching at the Edition Toronto Art Fair this weekend.

Ron Terada | Cockatoo Island

Ron Terada
Cockatoo Island
Port Colbourne/Vancouver, Canada: Bywater Bros. Editions/Or Gallery, 2009
104 pp., 19.3 x 14 cm., hardcover
Edition of 500

This book documents Ron Terada’s walkabout of Cockatoo Island in September 2008. Expecting an exotic, tropical landscape replete with cockatoos and other rare fauna, Terada instead found himself on an island more in common to an isolated penitentiary like Alcatraz. Located off Sydney Harbour, Cockatoo Island was indeed once the site of a former prison and shipyard, yet on this occasion, also the setting for the 2008 Sydney Biennale.

Presented in a refined yet deadpan serial layout, Terada’s Cockatoo Island “blacks-out” any visual evidence regarding the works in the exhibit, the trajectory of his walk, or any clues to the island itself. What remain are the name of each participating artist as presented by the Biennale organizers: on homely, hand-made signage that evokes at once both protest and resignation.

Available for $25 here, or at the Bywater Bros table at Edition Toronto this week, at a special fair price of $2.50.

With minimal interference and reduced means, in her practice, objects and images from everyday life are transformed and re-positioned. In doing so the artist poses questions about cause and effect, transience and continuity and opens up new spaces for reflection, resistance, creativity and thought."

Jack Pierson | Tomorrow's Man 3

Press release:

"To celebrate the publication of Tomorrow's Man 3, please join the artist for a book signing and edition release at the new Printed Matter location on 231 11th Ave, New York.

Bywater Bros. Editions presents the release of the third volume of Pierson's ground-breaking Tomorrow's Man book series, in which the artist has assembled an art-fueled creative collaboration that harkens back to the 13 volumes of the independent literary and art periodical The Yellow Book published between 1894-1897.

For the Printed Matter launch event, a special and limited hardcover edition of 75 which includes an original, signed and numbered, photograph will be available. The print will be available that night only at a discounted price of $250, with the proceeds benefiting the Fire Island Artist Residency and Printed Matter's move.

Whereas the first two Tomorrow's Man volumes implied an in-creasing density of layered imagery and collaborations with over 25 artists, Tomorrow's Man 3 amplifies the work of four artists. Richard Tinkler's delicate geometric abstractions are highlighted once again, working in concert with Pierson's recent series of figure studies; activist text works by Peter Fend that cry out for environmental justice; and a short story by Veralyn Behenna entitled 'The Flavor of Your Wish' in which an expatriate woman contemplates masculine beauty in a Grecian taverna. This is the first time Tomorrow's Man has included previously unpublished work by Pierson.

Woven into a poetic framework of connections, the resulting narrative takes the Tomorrow's Man series into new terrain that combines the vernacular of classic photography with the urgent, geopolitical narratives of Fend's texts, and the psychedelic reverberations of Tinkler's drawings. The result is a publication that is itself a collaborative work of art which, with Pierson's creative hand, manages to highlight each contributor, while simultaneously melding everything into a sophisticated mediation on culture and nature.

Regular edition $35 US - available with 4 different covers"
