Josef Albers | Interaction of Color

Josef Albers
Interaction of Color (50th Anniversary Edition)
Yale University Press, 2013
208 pp.,  6 x 0.75 x 9.25", softcover
Edition size unknown

"The 50th-anniversary edition of a classic text, featuring an expanded selection of color studies

Josef Albers’s Interaction of Color is a masterwork in art education. Conceived as a handbook and teaching aid for artists, instructors, and students, this influential book presents Albers’s singular explanation of complex color theory principles.

Originally published by Yale University Press in 1963 as a limited silkscreen edition with 150 color plates, Interaction of Color first appeared in paperback in 1971, featuring ten color studies chosen by Albers, and has remained in print ever since. With over a quarter of a million copies sold in its various editions since 1963, Interaction of Color remains an essential resource on color, as pioneering today as when Albers first created it.

Fifty years after Interaction’s initial publication, this new edition presents a significantly expanded selection of close to sixty color studies alongside Albers’s original text, demonstrating such principles as color relativity, intensity, and temperature; vibrating and vanishing boundaries; and the illusion of transparency and reversed grounds. A celebration of the longevity and unique authority of Albers’s contribution, this landmark edition will find new audiences in studios and classrooms around the world."

Confidential (1997), The Big Lebowski (1998), and Twilight (2008). Designed by Critton, the publication includes essays by Steve Rose, Jon Yoder, and Joseph Rosa.

Daniel Eatock

Daniel Eatock
Daniel Eatock
Draw Down Books, 2017
32 pp., 6.5 x 9.35", staple-bound
Edition size unknown

Daniel Eatock's new eponymously titled zine presents a selection of the artist's photographs of two-tone repaired cars. The work draws a connection between automotive repair, art conservation and the Japanese art of kintsugi, which treats breakage and repair in pottery as part of the history of the object, rather than something to disguise.

Eatock's photographs feature cars where a part from an identical model - but different colour - has been used as a replacement, and the owner has forgone the final stage of a repaint. The collection presents the thrifty practice as a considered aesthetic decision, where the different coloured door or hood becomes a distinguishing feature.

I saw a yellow car with a black door just last night and thought to myself that if my car required a replacement door I would probably not bother with the paint job, assuming the results looked as good as these (or as the similar Simon Starling Fiat project here).

The zine is priced at $15.00 but available this weekend for $10 at Printed Matter's LA Art Book Fair (Booth G–18), or by using the code LAABF at the Draw Down website, here.

Holiday Recommendation Guest Post: Kathleen Sleboda

Zak Jensen
Humans Being Human Beings
Cambridge, USA: Self-published, 2016
1 poster, ships folded (30 × 22.75 in.) with two postcards (7.5 × 5.25 in.)
Packaged in an archival plastic bag (8 x 12 in.)
Edition of 1000, individually numbered with a sticker

In this era where humane impulses are diminished in civic discourse, this poster (and sharable postcard set) are a reminder that our contemporary condition has biological and cultural dimensions. Or perhaps there are other meanings? Like much of designer’s Zak Jensen’s personal work — graphic and typographic explorations — simplicity allows for viewer interpretation.

Zak Jensen’s multiples supplement his professional practice as a graphic designer and reflect his love of simplicity, typography, and the human heart. Jensen is currently the design manager at the Harvard Art Museums in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He obtained his MFA from Yale after studying at the University of Utah.

Humans Being Human Beings is available here.

Kathleen Sleboda is a graphic designer and illustrator, co-founder of Draw Down Books, curator of Women of Graphic Design, and partner at Gluekit.
