Casey House

Casey House is Canada’s first and only stand-alone hospital for people with HIV/AIDS, dedicated to providing compassionate and dignified hospice and home care, as well as outreach programs.

The yearly fundraising auction Art With Heart is in it's 24th year. For most of those years a limited edition artists' project has been published, with works by BGL, Jon Sasaki, Michael Dumontier & Neil Farber, Vanessa Maltese, Barbara Aston, Paul Butler, Jaime Angelopoulos, and many others.

At the Toronto Art Book Fair this week, many of these editions are available for sale for the first time outside of the auction, with some deeply discounted. Visit Jennifer Simaitis at the booth in room 108, today, tomorrow and Sunday.

Garry Neill Kennedy

For the Toronto Art Book Fair, Garry Neill Kennedy and Cathy Busby are presenting a two fold exhibition featuring the artists' personal collection of printed matter, specifically political posters that span from the 1960s to the early 2000s, and a showcase of artists' books by students from the Printed Matter course taught by Garry and Cathy (separately and together) from 1990-presently at NSCAD and UBC.

A public discussion between Roger Bywater (at the fair with Bywater Brothers editions), Garry Neill Kennedy, and Cathy Busby at the Toronto Art Book Fair (180 Shaw St - Studio 101) starting tonight at 6:30pm.

A circle is divided and rearranged into four quadrants to create this black and white graphic lapel pin. The work is available as a single pin or as a special edition that houses an arrangement of four pins in a plexi box. The original design is rotated, reflected and reshuffled, to create 6 different patterns.

"The G, S, Y Types represent the only three possible configurations that can be constructed on a nine-square grid by tracing a continuous pathway through all nine squares. Additional variants can be generated by flipping or rotating the three basic types. The bevelled pathways were inspired by overhead views of gabled roofs and by First Style paintings from Pompeii. The three types are named after the letterforms they most closely resemble: G, S and Y."

The above works were launched at the inaugural Toronto Art Book Fair (a year ago this month) and Edition Fair (last fall). The third and final project in the series will be released this Thursday at the 2nd annual Toronto Art Book Fair, at the Nothing Else Press table, where the few remaining copies of the previous pins will also be available.

Toronto Art Book Fair

The second annual Toronto Art Book Fair previews this Thursday from 6 to 10pm at Artscape Youngplace. The fair then continues through until Sunday at 6pm. The fair features curated exhibitions, eighty vendors and community programming which includes panel discussions, readings, talks, launches and workshops.

The fair's stated goals are the dedication "to increasing the visibility, dissemination, appreciation and understanding of the Artist's Book and its contemporary manifestations within the Visual Arts Field [...] by presenting Artists' Books, Multiples and Printed Matter to a wider audience." This year the thematic focuz is "Archives and Alternative Narratives".

"Čista zona, Sergej Vutuc is a collaborative book by Berlin-based artist Sergej Vutuc and We Make It, Berlin. Its thick inky black and white risograph pages and glow-in-the-dark silkscreen cover pay homage to Vutuc’s transient lifestyle and the decay of contemporary Europe. Vutuc has spent his artistic career skateboarding around crumbling cities including Detroit, Israel, Palestine, and Fukushima in an attempt to capture the mistakes of modern society.

Sergej Vutuc grew up Zagreb, Croatia during a time of violent political unrest. As a young man in the 90s, Vutuc took to wearing a beard, joined the punk and skateboarding community, and asserted himself as a modern nomad. Through these visual acts of social defiance, Vutuc utilized his position as an outsider to bear witness to the development of oppressive government regimes and specter of institutional powers. Skateboarding culture infiltrates the privatization of public spaces, encourages corporeal awareness, and creates subversive communities, all of which allow Vutuc a unique photographic vantage point. Čista zona, Sergej Vutuc illustrates the intrinsic relationship between Vutuc’s subtle observations and his skateboarding lifestyle - unhindered, transient, and collaborative. Vutuc’s ‘zines and artists’ books are comprised of analog photographs that document his many journeys. The photographs are then warped with broken glass, overexposure and his signature writing style. Many of the pages fold out into provocative landscapes that expands the visual narrative into a multitude of possible readings. "

Water eroded rubble from the Leslie Street Spit - a dumping ground for sand, broken bricks, cinder blocks and earth dredged from construction projects across the city - is scavenged and converted into equipment for ballistic exercises. In between weight-lifting sessions they serve as attractive floor sculptures.

Available for one hundred dollars CDN each, here, or this weekend at the Toronto Art Book Fair. Each are accompanied by a signed postcard.


VSVSVS (pronounced versus versus versus), are a collective of seven artists who live together in a warehouse space that also serves as studio, gallery and sometimes residence for visiting artists.
The members' (Wallis Cheung, Ryan Clayton, Anthony Cooper, James Gardner, Stephen McLeod, Laura Simon, and Miles Stemp) cohabitation is part of their practice, and the venue itself is one of my favourite artworks in the city. The group also consistently deliver smart and funny large scale projects for venues like the Art Gallery of Ontario, Art Metropole, Mercer Union and Nuit Blanche, as well as an increasing national and international schedule of activities.

The Nothing Else Press is very pleased to announce the launch of a new work by Joy Walker. Walker is a Montreal born, Toronto-based artist whose work takes the form of sculpture, video, drawing and printmaking. Her approach is guided by intuition and is marked by a strong interest in process, materiality and play. She has exhibited across the country and internationally. Her work is held in numerous private collections and in the corporate collections of BMO-Bank of Montreal, Grant Thornton, and TD Bank. She is also the programmer of *QueenSpecific, a window gallery on Queen St West in Toronto and is represented by MKG127 in Toronto.

Art Writing for Emerging Arts Professionals | 1:00pm - 2:30pm

C Magazine Editor Amish Morrell will provide an overview of the social and institutional ecology of art writing in Canada for artists and writers who are at the beginning of their careers. We will consider the function of art writing in relation to galleries, granting bodies gallery-going publics, and as a means of advancing critical thought around contemporary art practice. We’ll also look at different formats and platforms for art writing, including gallery texts, exhibition catalogs, magazines and experimental artist-made publications, addressing how these forms of publication work and how one can best engage them as a writer.

Live Art Criticism Workshop | 3:00pm – 5:00pm

Independent critic Alison Cooley will lead this workshop on live and experimental forms of art criticism.We’ll focus on the activity of writing about art by looking, thinking and talking about artworks and publication projects at the Toronto Art Book Fair. As a group, we’ll tour the Fair, collecting observations and ideas. We’ll then produce responses and talk through our writing and findings together, exploring the possibilities live and embodied response holds for addressing the emotional and conceptual dimensions of practices at the fair.

The Nothing Else Press is pleased to announce a new artists' multiple by one of Canada’s most prominent and pioneering contemporary artists.

The country's five largest banks (in terms of assets, deposits and capitalization) are the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, the Royal Bank of Canada, Toronto Dominion, the Bank of Montreal and Scotiabank. Together they account for more than 85% of the banking industry in Canada.

Kennedy, whose work has often explored institutional power and the political implications of colour, has reassigned the colour schemes of the bank's corporate logos,  shifting them one down the financial ladder. The CIBC logo appears in RBC colours, the RBC in TD colours, TD in Scotiabank colours, etc., thus disrupting the institutions' corporate identities.

Garry Neill Kennedy is a recipient of the Order of Canada (2003) and the Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts (2004). In addition to an extensive international exhibition history, Kennedy was the president of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design for twenty-three years (1967-1990), establishing NSCAD as a forerunner in art education. Recently, MIT Press invited Kennedy to author a book, The Last Art College, NSCAD (1968-1978) which chronicles the first decade of his presidency. In 2012, the National Gallery of Canada published the catalogue raisonné Garry Neill Kennedy: Printed Matter, 1971 –2009. Kennedy is represented in Toronto by Diaz Contemporary.
