David Bellingham | Harmonica

David Bellingham
Harmonica
Glasgow, Scotland: Wax366, 1999
7", 45 rpm single
Edition size unknown

The glass harmonica is a musical instrument invented by Benjamin Franklin. The instrument consists of a set of graduated, tuned glass bowls sounded by the friction of wetted fingers on their rims.

For this 1999 work, David Bellingham enlisted the help of several artists and friends (Alec Finlay, Anne Bjerge Hansen, Annette Heyer, David Shrigley, Zoë Irvine and many others) to perform a single track, three minutes and forty-two seconds in length using the instrument. The clear vinyl of the seven inch single draws parallels between the tonearm of the record player and the wet fingered player.
