In 1967 Dick Higgins self-published Canto 1 of A Book About Love & War & Death as part of his Something Else Press’ Great Bear Pamphlet series (which also included George Brecht, John Cage, Robert Filliou, Al Hansen, Diter Rot, Wolf Vostell and others).

Cantos 2 and 3 are presented here, as part of a similar series of booklets called Nova Broadcast, published by Jan Herman (who Higgins later hired as the editor of the Something Else Press, from September 1972 - November 1974). Other titles in the series of six publications include Miss Vietnam by Wolf Vostell, and The Dead Star by William Burroughs.

Higgins published the complete A Book About Love & War & Death in 1972.

Jan Herman (1942) is an editor, publisher, author and journalist, best known for his association with Beat writers (William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg) and Fluxus artists (Dick Higgins, Wolf Vostell) from the time that he published his own Nova Broadcast Press, and was later the editor of the Something Else Press. He also co-wrote Cut Up or Shut Up.

This single-sided seven inch single was released on November 4th, 1969 (Election day), was recorded with the assistance of poet and drummer Clark Coolidge. A collage of various political speeches, noise and static, the work is designed to be played near local polling stations.

The work is accompanied by a mock ballot.
