Dave Dyment | Dead Ringer

The reason for the months-long hiatus here is that I was finishing up a film that I had been working on (slowly) for the better part of a decade. It premieres Tuesday night at Casa Loma in Toronto.

Toronto and Casa Loma are the subject matter of the work, which uses footage filmed in the city for Hollywood productions, to tell local stories. Titled Dead Ringer, the 107 minute long work is compiled from an archive of over 3000 clips from hundreds of films and television series. The work began as an answer to Thom Anderson's excellent Los Angeles Plays Itself documentary.

The Tuesday night screening sold out but I think there is a 'waiting list' at Eventbrite here, in case others unregister. The piece will also play more casually (where viewers can drop in watch the work ambiently) at Toronto City on the 7th and 16th of October.

The event is presented by Ontario Culture Days, who have produced a take-away movie poster which features a hundred footnotes for the film, on the verso. These are more digressions than citations and essentially amount to stories I wanted to tell in the larger text, but didn't have time for, or accompanying visuals. It's about seven thousand words in total and I think of the publication as a kind of artist book. Details to follow.
