Joseph Kosuth and John Cale | Balzac's Solitude

Joseph Kosuth and John Cale
Balzac's Solitude
Cincinnati, USA: Solway Gallery, 1994
36 x 23 x 10 cm.
Edition of 12 signed and dated copies

Balzac's Solitude is a collaboration between one of the founding members of the Velvet Underground, and one of the earliest practitioners of Conceptual Art.1

The work consists of a leather-bound book housing a 144-note Reuge music box mechanism. Kosuth designed the work, mostly the inclusion of the quote from French novelist Honore de Balzac: “Solitude is fine, but you need someone to tell you that solitude is fine.” Cale composed the music.

He originally set out to create a low rumbling sound to be reproduced by the music box mechanism. When this proved impossible, he substituted an existing untitled composition he had written for a friend’s wedding. I haven’t heard it, but the LA Times described it as "a bland little piece of no particular distinction."

The work was created for the 1994 exhibition The Music Box Project, curated by Claudia Gould. Gould had co-founded Tellus Audio Cassette Magazine with Joseph Nechvatal and Carol Parkinson in 1983. When their audio periodical folded after a decade of activity, she revisited the idea of music boxes by artists, something originally conceived of as a fundraising edition for Tellus.

Other works in the show include Laurie Anderson's witty Tilt #1, which utilizes as a carpenter’s level. One of two short tunes by Anderson plays, depending on which ay the level is titled. The movement also activates either a bobbing boat or tiny floating balloon.

John Cage contributed Extended Lullaby, which features a dozen music boxes, each playing a fragment of a piece he composed for his partner Merce Cunningham's Dance Company a year before his death in 1992.

Kiki Smith transcribed a poem she wrote into Braille and then translated the raised patterns on the page into the pins of the revolving music box cylinder, creating a brief, atonal composition.

Other artists in the exhibition include John Armleder, Nam June Paik, Aminah Robinson and Haim Steinbach. David Byrne, Stevie Wonder, Peter Gabriel, and Glenn Branca all declined to participate.

1. Josuth Kosuth provided the cover graphic for John Cale’s live album, Fragments of a Rainy Season, two years prior. It also consisted solely of a quotation: two lines from Shakespeare’s Macbeth:

Banquo: It will rain tonight.
First murderer: Let it come down!

Mieko Shiomi | An Incidental Story on the Day of the Solar Eclipse #1 #2 #3

Mieko Shiomi
An Incidental Story on the Day of the Solar Eclipse #1 #2 #3
Cologne, Germany: Edition Hundertmark, 1998
19 x 27 x 2.5 cm.
Edition of 30 signed and numbered copies

Hundertmark’s Box number 154 consists of a signed and numbered audio cassette (released in a larger edition of 400, including these 30), a colour photograph of the performance signed and numbered, four text pages and a score.

The 51 minute cassette was recorded during The Kobe International Modern Music Festival, November 2nd, 1997. The performers include Shiomi, Christophe Charles, Narrator Jerry Gordon, Saxophonist Eiji Hirata, pianist Keiko Fujishima and Soprano Megumi Hashiramoto.

"There are many other transmedia pieces, but the most extreme example is a series I began with a book locked with a key, submitted to the Book Object exhibition [see below]. This is one volume out of three. The content is a short story in English that unfolds while a pianist plays from Bach’s Partitas. Each sentence begins with a word that starts with the first letter of a dance form contained in the music. Later this became a two-dimensional work. It grew into a chamber music piece, An Incidental Story on the Day of a Solar Eclipse, via a simple performance that consists of narration, piano, soprano, saxophone, a performer, and environmental sounds from speakers."

Susan Hiller | Witness

Susan Hiller
Witness
London, UK: Artangel, 2001
78 pp., 27.8 x 18.7 cm., hardcover
Edition size unknown

"People see strange things. Lights in the sky, mysterious phenomena, visions and visitations — things they can't explain but know they saw. Susan Hiller has been collecting stories of these sightings for years. Some of them are prosaic and descriptive. Others are visionary and marvelous. All of them are true. Hundreds of eyewitness accounts were brought together through years of research for "Witness", Susan Hiller's ambitious installation, which asks us to explore the area where rational explanations no longer seem to hold. This accompanying publication, presented as the artist's "Witness" research file, contains a large selection of the original witness statements, as well as a selection of Hiller's personal notes, sketches, and drawings on the work as it developed. To seduce the reader into experiencing the visions of others, the book comes with a CD containing 50 witness statements."

Dave Dyment | Untitled (Headphones)

Dave Dyment
Untitled (Headset)
Toronto, Canada, 2007

A pair of headphones is altered so that one of the earpieces becomes a microphone, picking up its own sound from the other and creating a continuous feedback loop, which is disrupted by attempts to listen closer. The headphones hang on the wall, humming with feedback, until the listener puts them on. The silence they hear serves as a blunt metaphor for the inability to understand infinity (your head gets in the way).

It also stems from a love of a good feedback loop (the purest sound?) and hatred of audio art exhibitions that are primarily experienced through headphones.

The work was made for my first solo exhibition with MKG127, over fifteen years ago, and subsequently was part of group exhibitions at Blackwood Gallery in Mississauga and Lisa Cooley Gallery in New York City.

It's currently on display back at MKG127, in an exhibition titled Feedback Loop, curated by Rowan Lynch. Other artists in the show include Rachel Crummey, Tina Guo, Soledad Muñoz, Devon Pryce, and Josi Smit.

Feedback Loop closes this Saturday, March 18th, 2023.

Brian Eno | Making Space

Brian Eno
Making Space
London, UK: Lumen London, 2010
Audio CD
Edition size unknown

A collection of nine previously unreleased tracks which was launched during Eno's June 2010 visit to Mexico City and subsequently only available from art galleries hosting his touring 77 Million Paintings exhibition. This copy is from the Glenbow Museum in Calgary, which presented the video installation in early 2011.

Last week is was announced that Brian Eno will receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale. The award honours the 74 year old Eno's “research into the quality, beauty and diffusion of digital sound and for his conception of the acoustic space as a compositional instrument,” according to a press release.

“Brian Eno’s compositions have been conceived in terms of a generative process that evolves in a potentially infinite time dimension, foreshadowing many of today’s compositional trends linked to digital sound.”
- Lucia Ronchetti, Biennale announcement
