Dave Dyment | Untitled (Headphones)

Dave Dyment
Untitled (Headset)
Toronto, Canada, 2007

A pair of headphones is altered so that one of the earpieces becomes a microphone, picking up its own sound from the other and creating a continuous feedback loop, which is disrupted by attempts to listen closer. The headphones hang on the wall, humming with feedback, until the listener puts them on. The silence they hear serves as a blunt metaphor for the inability to understand infinity (your head gets in the way).

It also stems from a love of a good feedback loop (the purest sound?) and hatred of audio art exhibitions that are primarily experienced through headphones.

The work was made for my first solo exhibition with MKG127, over fifteen years ago, and subsequently was part of group exhibitions at Blackwood Gallery in Mississauga and Lisa Cooley Gallery in New York City.

It's currently on display back at MKG127, in an exhibition titled Feedback Loop, curated by Rowan Lynch. Other artists in the show include Rachel Crummey, Tina Guo, Soledad Muñoz, Devon Pryce, and Josi Smit.

Feedback Loop closes this Saturday, March 18th, 2023.
