The 11th Stadtisches Museum boxed catalogue accompanies an exhibition of Richard Long’s work (his second, ever) that ran from July 16th to August 30th, 1970. 

A floor plan of the museum’s first floor is printed on the inner lid of the box, and texts by the artist and curator Johannes Cladders are printed, in German, on the bottom inner lid. Enclosed is an 18 page bookwork containing 13 images of works and a portrait of the artist on the cover. 

The 4 sculptures of the title refer to works that Long produced in England, Germany, Africa, and America, between the years 1966 and 1970.

Subtitled a straight line of sight through 360 degrees, this artist book describes forty-seven planes of vision from the coast to the English channel, walking in a straight line for sixty-nine miles. 

Signed copies of this are rare, but the above copy suggests up to twenty were signed and numbered by Long.

An artist book comprised of 11 offset lithographs and 22 pages of accompanying text by the artist, with original mud drawing, on handmade paper, the full sheets and with margins, the sheets mounted to a linen concertina and hand-sewn with hemp, the book wrapped in natural canvas, contained in the original wooden box within a grey painted wooden traveling case.

Designed by Long and Herman Lelie, the project was directed by Elena Foster. The letterpress and lithography were made by Francis Atterbury and the boxes were produced by Paul de Bock under Long’s close supervision. The paper was hand-made with straw and stones by Ruscombe Paper Mill especially for the edition and was supervised by Richard Long, who also mixed the inks. 

The work has exhibited in London (Victoria and Albert Museum, Tate Britain, London, Whitechapel Gallery), Venice (Palazzo Fortuny) and Madrid (Ivorypress, the publisher). 

An edition of 58, only the first sixteen includes the mud drawing. The remaining forty-two contain a reproduction. There is an artist proof for both versions. 

The title is valued at approximately four to five thousand dollars.

An artist book produced in conjunction with an exhibition at the Anthony d'Offay gallery in 1981. The title reproduces the texts of twelve walking works. The above is the special hard-cover edition with embossed boards, each copy signed and numbered in red crayon on the colophon page.

"I think the first mud work on paper was River Avon Book of 1979, where I had the idea to make this book with the pages dipped in muddy water. So I got all these sheets, quite big sheets, and after they had been dipped in the muddy water they were cut down and bound into these books. That was the first time I used paper with mud on it."

A cardboard box containing an unpaginated artist's book with texts (in English and German) by curator Johannes Cladders and Richard Long. Created to accompany Long's second museum exhibition, which ran from July 16th to August 30th, 1970.
