Jonas Hafner studied with Joseph Beuys (the first artist in the legendary Städtisches Museum boxed catalogue series) at the Kunstakademie, and earned a doctorate in philosophy at the University of Düsseldorf. For his 1976 exhibition he examined the recently demolished Dominican Monastery on Herzogstraße in Düsseldorf.
Built in 1890, the building was destroyed in the WWII air raids on Düsseldorf in 1942 and ’43. In the postwar period, the monastery church was restored and was re-consecrated on February 19, 1950. The building was demolished 22 years later, to make room for the new building of the expanding Westdeutsche Landesbank.
The accompanying catalogue is a printed die-cut cardboard box containing 26 loose cards mostly with German text and image overlays, three folded posters and a stamped wafer.
