Max Schumann

Printed Matter Press Release:

"This week is Max Schumann’s last week as director of Printed Matter, after eight years in the role and more than 30 years with the organization. We invite you to join us in cheering him by sending any photos or short messages to info@printedmatter.org — We’ll be posting them throughout the week in celebration!

Max has made innumerable contributions during his time with Printed Matter, always a deep and steadfast believer in the power of artists’ books and their infinite possibilities. During his tenure he has invested in artists and publishers at all stages of their practice, steering and strengthening Printed Matter as a nonprofit bookstore and a Project that encompassed so much more. All the while he found time to edit books, organize exhibitions, fundraise, give talks to visiting school groups, and be the resident expert in Out of Print material. He was an entrypoint to artists' books for so many, and served as a model for how to live among artists’ books....always with an impassioned outlook and in his own inimitable style.

This Thursday, Sept 14, 6 - 8 PM, we’ll be hosting an informal send-off to Max at the Chelsea storefront (231 11th Avenue). The celebration will feature refreshments, light snacks, and the opportunity to wish Max the best as he moves on to his next chapter! The gathering will coincide with a reception held for a new display by British artist, archivist, and ex-punk Toby Mott ( @culturaltraffic ). Join us!

Krista Manrique, deputy director / director of development, will serve as interim director until Printed Matter’s next Executive Director is placed this fall. Thank you for joining in toasting Max Schumann during his final days at PM!"
