Roy Lichtenstein | Turkey Shopping Bag
Roy Lichtenstein
Turkey Shopping Bag
New York City, USA: Bianchini Gallery, 1964
49 x 43 cm.
Screen-print on shopping bag
Edition of (approximately) 125 signed copies
Created for The American Supermarket exhibition held at the Bianchini Gallery in New York from October 6 to November 7, 1964, the Turkey Shopping Bag featured a silkscreened image of Lichtenstein's 1961 painting Turkey, which was also included in the exhibition. The show also included food related works by Billy Apple, Bob Watts, Mary Inman, Claes Oldenburg, Tom Wesselmann (another turkey) and Andy Warhol (who also produced a new silkscreened shopping bag).
Accounts differ, but the bags originally sold for either 12 or 2 dollars each, and they now fetch over $3000 at auction.
