"Janek Schaefer's first sound-work, Recorded Delivery, remains one of the wittiest and most interesting in the field of Sound-Art. It is elegant, economical and clever, and makes me wish I'd thought of it first."
Brian Eno, 2005
Best gift of 2012:
On Saturday I received Recorded Delivery, the first recording by the London-based artist and composer Janek Schaefer. Schaefer won the British Composer of the Year award for Sonic Art for his work Triptych for the child survivors of war and conflict in 2008, and is probably best known to Artists' Records collectors for his 2004 work Skate.
For his participation in Self Storage, an exhibition involving Laurie Anderson, Brian Eno and students from the Royal College of Art, in 1995, Schaefer sent a parcel from his home to the exhibition space. Inside the box was a sound activated tape recorder, capturing all sounds en route. The fifteen hour trip recorded 72 minutes of sound, and in 1999 a red vinyl single was released, further editing down the journey. Produced by Hot Air Records in an edition of 600, the disk has sold out and the artist himself only has a single signed copy left, which sells for over three hundred pounds. So this was not something I was expecting to have in the collection any time soon (many thanks to PVK).
