Throwing Rocks at the Sun consists of a series of nearly identical photographs taken of a sunset at a beach in Ranchos Palos Verdes, California, in 2008, each with a different stone being thrown towards the sun. The photographs are accompanied by drawings made by Denise Schatz of stones she found at the same location, three years later.

Yvon Lambert to close

Sad news:

"Yvon Lambert has announced that he will close his gallery, which he first opened in 1966 on rue de L’Échaudé in Paris with exhibitions that promoted early Conceptual and Minimalist work by artists including Carl Andre and Lawrence Weiner. In 1977, Lambert opened a larger space in the Marais district, showing work by artists like Joseph Beuys, Louise Lawler, and Allan McCollum, before moving to his present space on rue Vieille du Temple in 1986, where he worked with Nan Goldin, Joan Jonas, Jenny Holzer, and Glenn Ligon among others. In 2003, he opened a gallery in New York, which closed in 2011. The dealer plans to devote his attention to his foundation, the Collection Lambert en Avignon, which he opened in 2000 to showcase his privately owned artwork, which includes more than 1200 pieces by contemporary artists."

Canada's Anti-Spam Law (or CASL) was passed in December of 2010 and will be enforced as of the first of this month. Designed to protect from unwanted emails, the law prohibits businesses from sending unsolicited messages. The act requires explicit consent from a recipient and the fines for breaking the law are reportedly between one and ten million dollars.

The sledgehammer effect is that all galleries have been forced to send out pleading messages inviting those on their current mailing list to confirm their interest. Based on social media complaints, it is not uncommon to lose 60% of your database in the process.

Despite waiting until (literally) the last minute (after people had been inundated for weeks with other requests) The Nothing Else Press hasn't been quite that unlucky, but we have lost more than we hoped to. We figured our list was maybe padded by 20% or so (people who might've been interested in a particular artist we published, but probably not any of the others, for example) but we lost almost twice that number.

So I thought I would appeal to the board here, and offer a raffle prize to boot. The Nothing Else Press publishes on average a couple of multiples or editions a year. We have published works by Jonathan Monk, David Shrigley, Alex Snukal, Paul Butler, Ken Nicol, Micah Lexier, Karen Azoulay, Colleen Savage, Michael Dumontier, Neil Farber, Kelly Mark and Vanessa Maltese. Forthcoming projects include Jon Sasaki, Cary Leibowitz, Jimmy Limit, Lee Ranaldo and Maurizio Nannucci. You will never receive more than 5 or 6 messages from us a year.

David Shrigley at Sketch

In 2011, the London New French cuisine restaurant Sketch commissioned an interior from Martin Creed, who created a tessellated floor made of 96 different marbles and purchased new cutlery that ranged from high end design pieces to dollar store purchases.

The restaurant, which covers two floors of a converted 18th century site in Conduit Street, Mayfair, now follows that project with a new environment by David Shrigley. With the walls newly painted pink, Shrigley has installed 200 framed drawings, which is reportedly the largest group of his works ever exhibited.

He has also created a new range of white ceramic tableware. The website offers no clues as to how to purchase these, but it has been suggested that they will be available for sale.

One of the rarer Fluxus boxed works, with reportedly few copies produced. The only existing copies that I’m aware of are at the Pompidou in France and in the Gilbert and Lila Silverman collection, now housed at the MOMA. The piece is never mentioned by Maciunas in any documented correspondence, and appears only twice in Fluxus listings; the first in 1973 and the last in 1976, when it was being offered for $8.00 a copy. Both times it is referred to as "Thermal Event".
