Das Flug Zeug
Monchengladbach, Germany: Stadtisches Museum Monchengladbach, 1969
21 x 17 x 3 cm
Edition of 330 numbered copies
One of the simplest and most effective of the Monchengladbach Stadtisches Museum boxed catalogue/multiples hybrids, this work consists of a cardboard box with a photograph of the artist next to a Dakota airplane. Inside is a string whose length corresponds with the diameter of the propeller of Das Flugzeug, a helicopter with two propellers, each composed of three blades.
The artist, born in Belgium in 1940, has been creating works about flight for the last five decades.
Given the number of (small) catalogues produced about his multiples, presumably many of them are editions.

The recording documents an installation in 2002 in which the artist subjected mocking birds to the sound of French Composer Olivier Messiaen's Catalogue D'Oiseaux, an experimental composition for piano, based on bird songs. Towards the end of the exhibition the mocking birds begin mimicking the sound of the piano melodies. Nature reflecting art reflecting nature.
