Cindy Sherman | Madame de Pompadour (née Poisson)

Cindy Sherman
Madame de Pompadour (née Poisson)
New York City, USA: Artes Magnus, 1990
36.8 x 55.9 x 28.6 cm.
Edition of 75

A 21-piece breakfast tea service, with a setting for six: cups and saucers, breakfast/dessert plates, a teapot, creamer and covered sugar bowl. Produced in an edition of 75 in each colour: yellow, Pompadour pink, apple green and royal blue.

Still available from the publisher (thirty-five years later) for ten grand. If this seems steep, an incomplete set sold at Christies earlier this year for $32,760 US.

"This limited-edition tureen was manufactured in the famed pottery factory at Limoges, France, according to designs by the noted contemporary American photographer Cindy Sherman. The highly embellished Rococo style of the tureen became popular during the reign of the French king Louis XV (1715–1774), and porcelain was an important vehicle for its spread throughout Europe. The object is decorated with printed photographic images of Sherman in the guise of Madame de Pompadour, a mistress of Louis XV’s and an avid collector of porcelain. These images are typical of Sherman’s work: the artist is known for turning the camera on herself in order to raise questions about a variety of issues, particularly the role of women in society. Madame de Pompadour’s maiden name was Poisson, French for “fish,” and the interior bottom of the tureen is embellished with a still-life image that combines fish with luxurious jewelry in an amusing reference to both Pompadour and her social status.”

Laurie Simmons | Water Ballet/Family Collision

Laurie Simmons
Water Ballet/Family Collision
Minneapolis, USA: Walker Art Center, 1987
8 pp., 16 x 24 cm., stiff boards
Edition size unknown

The artist's third book features five full-bleed black and white images of dolls floating in pools and five colour photographs of nude women in various pools and the clear waters of the Caribbean. Designed by Yolanda Cuomo, the cardboard pages are laminated and the synthetic cover simulates  the surface of a swimming pool.

"For her series Water Ballet (1980-1981), the legendary American photographer staged an underwater choreography with her friends, including Cindy Sherman, in direct reference to the Post-War Hollywood water ballets."
- Time Out

When I shot underwater, I obviously had to go to swimming pools. But then after that, I started dropping little toys in tanks of water in my own house. There are times when I really need to go somewhere to shoot, but it never feels right. And I never wanted to be that person who I would see out on the street with their cameras, and they looked really strong and cool and tough, but I just kept thinking, “I’m not that person.” It felt like the actual act of shooting was a kind of performance.

Brian Kennon | The Cindy Shermans I'd Like to Fuck

Brian Kennon
The Cindy Shermans I'd Like to Fuck
Los Angeles, USA: Self-published, 2003
82 pp., 22.5 x 20 cm, paperback
Edition of 250.
Kennon appropriates Cindy Sherman's self portraits to form a portrait of himself, or his libido, at least.

I remember seeing this at the New Museum bookstore a few years ago and kicking myself later for having decided that my luggage could not accommodate any more bookshopping. The title is now hard to come by, and more than five times it's original price. It would make a nice companion to Mike Kelley's Why I Got Into Art.

The Cindy Shermans I'd Like to Fuck is available for $300 US at Printed Matter, where it's currently on display as part of the exhibition HELP/LESS. The exhibition also includes Kennon's Untitled #1, 2006 (Mike Kelley, Silver Ball), Simon Morris' Re-Writing Freud, Dennis Oppenheim's Flower Arrangement for Bruce Nauman, The Festival of Plagiarism by Stephen Perkins, Richard Prince's Catcher in the Rye, David Hammon's Holy Bible, Joseph Kosuth's Purloined, Woman with a Camera (35mm) by Anne Collier, Greg Allen's Canal Zone; Richard Prince; YES RASTA and numerous other titles that "explore the fluidity of authorship in artists' books and multiples." The exhibition runs until September 29th, 2012.

For more information about the exhibition, visit here, and for click here for Brian Kennon's site.
