"In the world of artist’s books, there is a certain disdain for the elaborately handmade bookwork. Artists who invest too much in the choice of paper or type of print - let alone binding, or elements such as pop-ups - are considered outside the critical discourse. Tauba Auerbach changes this discussion. She joins a phalanx of predominantly female artists who have embraced skills that might be called 21st century morphs of deliberately handcrafted books, sometimes alluding to pop-ups, or weaving, or pattern-making, as a kind of abstraction that seems derived if not suited ideally for a domestic context. Auerbach moves easily between process and mediums, and her technical knowledge of materials, plus her wide-ranging “sampling” are her trademark. STAB/GHOST, is a translucent book composed of clear plastic pages, silkscreened with patterns, sewn with lanyards of plastic thread, and mounted on a specially designed light table. True to her interest in complex geometries and color theory, the book also functions as a light sculpture."
