"Warhol’s first retrospective took place at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm in February – March, 1968. It has been argued by Germano Celant that this publication is the first example of the artist book-as-exhibition catalogue. Warhol was handed control of the layout and image selection, and he organized the book’s contents into three sections: a collection of his now-famous quotes, followed by page after page of images of his work arranged in a serial manner, and then a collection of photographs of the goings-on at Warhol’s New York studio, the Factory. For this second printing of the catalogue, a section with photographs of the exhibition’s opening party was added. Printed only as a soft cover and on cheap newsprint-quality paper, this book has become, again in Celant’s words, a “prototype of information as artwork…because of its linguistic use of photography as opposed to using photographs as documentation.”"

Siglio Press

The most recent catalogue from Siglio Press celebrates the independent publisher's tenth anniversary, as well as it's move from LA to the Hudson River Valley in New York. Founded in 2008 by Lisa Pearson, Siglio is "dedicated to publishing uncommon books that live at the intersection of art and literature. Siglio books are cross-disciplinary, hybrid works that defy categorization."

Their titles include books by or about John Cage, Marcel Broodthaers, Ray Johnson, Sophie Calle, Nancy Spero, and many other artists and authors.

2018 will see the list of titles Siglio have published rise to thirty, including a forthcoming compendium of writings by Dick Higgins, called Intermedia, Fluxus and the Something Else Press: Selected Writings by Dick Higgins. Edited by Steve Clay of Granary Books and Fluxus artist and scholar Ken Friedman (who worked with Higgins, as the General Manager for the Something Else Press in the early seventies), the book will be the first posthumous title by Higgins, who died twenty years ago this October. New Printed Matter Location

ArtNews and Artforum both reported this week that Printed Matter bookstore will be opening a second location. The outpost will be located at Thirty-Eight St. Mark’s Place, at the corner of Second Avenue, in New York City, as part of the new Swiss Institute.

Max Schumann, the executive director of Printed Matter, said that the collaboration “presents an amazing opportunity to bring the creative, experimental, and critical work being done in the field of artists’ publications to a broader audience, which is at the heart of Printed Matter’s mission,”

Printed Matter / St. Mark’s will open to the public in just over a month, on the 21st of June.
