According to Conner's friend and fellow film-maker Stan Brakhage (in his 1991 book Film at Wit's End) the artist signed with a New York gallery whose contract stipulations included lifestyle restrictions that offended Conner, and he reacted by attending openings and silently pinning the buttons to the patron's clothing.
