I met Ray Johnson once. Alias Earlene & Sweeney's (me & the missus) 1st trip to the Big Apple. We were gallery hopping in Soho with David Zack, Ruth Walsh, and their one year old son, Ezekial, or Zeke Zack. It was really warm that Saturday, June 9th, 1973, the day Secretariat won the triple crown at the Belmont Stakes
We ran into Ray at the O.K. Harris Gallery, and David introduced us. Ray was passing out flyers inviting everyone to attend The First Buddha University Meeting for Mary Josephson at the Paula Cooper Gallery later that day. Ray was wearing a Cornell T-shirt, from the university, but we all knew it meant Joseph. Ray had just killed off The New York Correspondence School in a letter to the New York Times. Brian O'Doherty in the guise of Mary Josephson had written a review of Ray's Betty Parsons Gallery show, in Art News, assessing Ray's medium as Gossip of the post-comic-strip-mind bent. Mary Josephson was a no show, but there were lots of other folks, including John Evans, Woo Hoo May Wilson, E.M. Plunkett, John Dowd, Vince Aletti, David Zack, Ruth Walsh, Zeke Zack, Hoo Hoo Archives, and Earlene & Sweeney Atrophy.
