Catherine Opie | Dyke Deck

Catherine Opie
Dyke Deck
Los Angeles, USA: MoCA, 1995
10 x 7 x 2 cm.
Edition size unknown

Catherine Opie grew up in a home that placed great importance on the family photo album, and documentation of loved ones. She remembers her mother constantly taking home videos and snapshots. She was given her first camera at age nine and continued the family tradition.

This deck of playing cards includes images of friends and strangers, as a documentation of queer life in the 90's. Each suit represents a different stereotype. Hearts are images of couples, Clubs are 'jocks', Diamonds are 'femmes' and Spades are 'Butch Dykes'.

Note: some listings cite this work as from 1995, others from 1996 and others still from "circa 1995". Similarly, the publisher is sometimes listed as LA MoCA, sometimes as self-published, but available at LA MoCA. If you have clarifying information, leave it in the comments below, among the cryptocurrency cons, the herbal remedies and the offers to work from home.

"[Dyke Deck] was really fun to do that. I did an open call in San Francisco. A good portion of them were friends, but some were people I had never even met. They just came and performed for me, and it was so fun."
