Francesca Woodman | Some Disordered Interior Geometries

Francesca Woodman
Some Disordered Interior Geometries
Synapse, [1981]
[24] pp., 23 x 16.5 cm., softcover
Edition of 500

Some Disordered Interior Geometries - the only book published by Francesca Woodman in her lifetime - was produced in 1981, shortly before she took her own life at age 22. It consists of a facsimile of an antique Italian geometry exercise notebook titled “Esercizi Graduati di Geometria,” over which the artist has superimposed sixteen self-portraits, and added handwritten notes, as well as glue and correction fluid stains.

The book is extremely scarce as 450 copies of the 500 produced were reportedly given to Woodman's family, who distributed the bulk of them at the artist's funeral. In November 2003, the title was the highest priced book sold through ABE, with a copy selling for $17,500 US.

The Creators Project lists it as one of the 11 rarest books at the recent NY Art Book Fair, alongside titles by Ed Ruscha, Maurizio Cattelan, Tom of Finland, Roy Lichtenstein and May Ran. Read the article, here.
