The 2nd annual Multiples Multiples Multiples event is taking place today at Art Metropole in Toronto, from noon to five pm.

This time last year a group of artists and publishers arranged a pop-up shop at the Toronto gallery MKG127, with the idea that the worst case scenario would be an afternoon spent with friends. It turned out to be a huge success, packed with visitors all day, and with little time to socialize. 

The 2nd annual event is taking place tomorrow at Art Metropole. We won’t be there with the Nothing Else Press, but all of the others will be present, many with new projects to launch. 

Drop by between noon and five pm tomorrow at Art Met to finish up your holiday shopping. 

Multiples Pop-Up Shop

 

In Toronto there’s a tight-knit community of publishers interested in editions. Today, several of us are presenting a pop-up shop at MKG127, from noon to six. Participants include Paul+Wendy Projects, Slow Editions, GuyGuyGuy, Alicia’s Klassic Kool Shoppe, Jimmy Limit & Maggie Groat and our own Nothing Else Press. 

For several years the Toronto Art Fair accommodated publishers of artists’ books and multiples but this stopped during Covid, and hasn’t returned. So this event harkens back to something four of us (along with Bywater Brothers) hosted years ago at G Gallery. 

Whether you’re doing some last minute Christmas shopping (or Christmas shopping), or nearby enough to stop in and say hello, please drop by. There will be things available for every price range, including risographed zines, rubber stamps, t-shirts,  tote-bags, hats, scarves, postcards, prints, pins, clocks, sculpture, stickers, ceramics, cards, etc. etc.

My friends Micah Lexier and Eunice Luk co-teach a class at the University of Toronto on the subject of Artist Multiples. I gave a Zoom talk to the class earlier in the year, and the students seemed smart and engaged. They are lucky to have not one, but two profs who are so throughly entrenched in the genre (as artists, publishers, collectors, etc.). 

For the final class project the students were tasked with creating a multiple in an edition size high enough that they could share examples with all of their classmates. Micah and Eunice participated in the trade, also. 

This is Eunice's piece: a handmade rubber stamped box containing a single potato, and the simple poetic instruction of "It starts with one. Plant the eyes looking up to the sky". 

The work nicely equates multiple production with its earliest precedent and serves as a rallying call, also. Let a thousand flowers bloom (to misquote Mao).

The Printed Matter Virtual Art Book Fair

Eunice Luk talk tomorrow

Tomorrow at 2pm, the Vancouver Art Book Fair presents Slow & Steady a talk by Eunice Luk. Currently based in Yokohama, Japan, Luk is an artist and the founder of Slow Editions. Slow Editions has published books, book bags, prints and multiples by Alicia Nauta, Hanna Hur, Jennifer Carvalho, Katie Lyle, Masanao Hirayama, Sophy Naess, and Vanessa Maltese.

"Working under the basis of slow, each publication is deliberately thought out, designed and often produced by hand. Much of Slow Editions’ oeuvre carefully considers form as an integral part of communicating the contents. Luk discusses her unique way of publishing and modes of production through examples of artist books and multiples."

"I love Eunice Luk’s black and white silkscreen posters. You can find them for sale through Slow Editions. Luk creates her drawings intuitively, pulling from many diverse references such as architecture and people, and responding to a moment or feeling. I love how Luk uses form, such as how the letters in B-O-D-Y are treated more as shapes than letters. The overlapping elements and composition create a feeling of movement – as if it were a body in motion."


Sarah Nasby is an artist working primarily in sculpture and drawing. She received an MFA from NSCAD University and a BA from the University of Guelph. Her work has been shown recently in Para//el Rooms at DNA Artspace, London; Taking [a] part at Mercer Union, Toronto; Who’s Afraid of Purple, Orange and Green? at the Dunlop Art Gallery, Regina. She lives and works in Toronto.

Bob MacIntyre has been the Preparator and Exhibition Coordinator at the Burnaby Art Gallery since the fall of 1996 and is responsible for curating the gallery’s exhibits in Burnaby’s Public Libraries. Past exhibitions there have included work from Paul and Wendy Projects, Michael Dumontier, Image Bank and Paul de Guzman.
