San Francisco Sex and Protest 1988-2003
Starting in one hour (2pm):
Dark Room: online event with Phyllis Christopher, Michelle Tea & Laura Guy
"At the 2021 Printed Matter Virtual Book Fair, Book Works will present an online event to present Dark Room: San Francisco Sex and Protest 1988-2003 – the first ever collection of Phyllis Christopher’s trailblazing photography of lesbian erotic life and political struggle. The event will stream live as part of the Classroom programme at Printed Matter on 25th February 2021 at 2pm EST (7pm GMT).
In 1988, at the age of 24, Phyllis Christopher was drawn to San Francisco with her camera to capture a thriving lesbian counterculture involving sex parties, kiss-ins, and street demonstrations. This program features an intimate conversation about lesbian sexuality and documentary on the occasion of Phyllis Christopher’s debut solo publication, Dark Room (Book Works, 2021). The conversation will include Christopher and acclaimed author Michelle Tea, moderated by Laura Guy, editor of Dark Room."

Adrian Piper | Colored People
Adrian Piper
Colored People
London, UK: Bookworks, 1991
292 pp., 21.5 x 28 cm., softcover
Edition of 1000 copies
“Tickled pink. Scarlet with embarrassment. Purple with anger. Blue. Green with envy. Jaundiced yellow. White with fear. Black depression.” Adrian Piper’s book is a collaboration with sixteen people who were asked to cut out these ‘metaphorical moods’ and record them as photographs which Piper then took responsibility for sorting, depending on her response to the expressions. According to Piper, the book “was intended as a light-hearted conceptual gesture with serious implications”.
Colored People is a project that attempts to deal with two aspects of prejudgement; those made about others and those made about art that is delimited as political as a method of containment of what else it may be about, how richly politics may be defined."

Katie Paterson | Lightbulb to Simulate Moonlight
Katie Paterson
Lightbulb to Simulate Moonlight
London, UK: Bookworks, 2008
25 x 16 x 11 cm.
Edition of 10
Katie Paterson’s research-based projects often see her collaborating with specialists from the fields of astronomy, astrophysics, genetics, and nanotechnology. For the installation work Lightbulb to Simulate Moon Light, Paterson worked with engineers to determine the spectral measurements of moonlight. They took light-meter readings, analyzed wavelengths, and found an appropriate surface coating in order to produce a bulb that emits rays approximating the light of a full moon.
Paterson commissioned OSRAM Licht AG, a multi-national lighting manufacturer based in Munich, to manufacture the 28 W bulbs with a lifespan of 2,000 hours. The work is exhibited and sold as a wooden crate containing 289 bulbs, which corresponds to the average human life expectancy of 66 years (based on 2008 estimates). Each time the work (produced in an edition of nine copies) is exhibited - with a single bulb burning in the gallery - the lifespan of the artwork is shortened.
This version from Bookworks contains two of the bulbs in a cloth-covered, letter-pressed box.

Holiday Recommendations Guest Post #1: Dora García
Maria Fusco
Master Rock
London, UK: Bookworks, 2015
92 pp., 21 x 13.5 cm., hardcover
Edition of 1250
"I have been interested in Maria Fusco's work for many years, since she is an author who is also an artist, or an artist who writes, or a writer who knows contemporary art, or an art writer; embodying what we should really mean by artistic research. I have always enjoyed her texts, and her position, and her projects, in very recent times with the periodic publication The Happy Hypocrite.
The present book is a reader for her project of the same name, Master Rock, portraying the shaping of a mountain by the industrial age, a mountain with a gaelic name: Ben Cruachan. The project puts together "geology, mythology, and technology" - a performance who is also a radio play is also part of the overall project."
Master Rock is available from the publisher, here, for £12.00. Visit Fusco's website, here.
