London Art Book Fair 2015

AA Bronson's Top Five of the London Art Book Fair

AA Bronson, who founded and directed both the New York and LA Art Book Fairs (as well as founding Art Metropole and serving as director for Printed Matter for a number of years) was invited by the London Art Book Fair to share his experiences with book fairs and publishing. In addition to the talk about his life and work with General Idea, he presented a video about his banned erotic novel Lena (more about novels by artists later this week).

While in London, Time Out Magazine asked him for his top five choices from the fair, and Nothing Else Press was his fifth:

5. Nothing Else Press, Toronto
‘Named after Dick Higgins Fluxus-heavy press of the ’60s and ’70s, Something Else Press, this young publisher seemed the only ones present to have produced an entire new line of works especially for the Fair. My favourite? “Eel’s Wallet” by Dean Baldwin, an edition of 47 wallets stuffed full of drinks tickets, which bizarrely becomes some sort of “book” for which we have no name. £80.’

London Art Book Fair event: Pablo Bronstein, Jeremy Deller and Ruth Ewan

At noon on Saturday September 27th, the London Art Book Fair features a panel discussion with Pablo Bronstein, Jeremy Deller and Ruth Ewan. Critic and writer Ossian Ward moderates a conversation with the artists on the topic of how to navigate, look at and experience contemporary works of art.

Drawing on motifs that have cycled through her recent body of work, Maltese likens this hinged sculptural edition to “samples you might flip through if you were interested in ginger-breading the roof of your house or something. It’s reminiscent of a kids toy, which I am into, as it is a rather useless object at the end of the day."

Bio:

Vanessa Maltese was born in 1988. Currently based in Toronto, she holds a BFA from OCAD University. She is the recipient of the Drawing and Painting Medal from OCAD U in 2010 and the winner of the RBC Painting Competition in 2012. Maltese is represented in Toronto by Cooper Cole.

London Art Book Fair event: Antonia Hirsch: In Conversation

On Saturday September 27th, from noon to 1:30 pm, artist Antonia Hirsch will speak about her practice at the London Art Book Fair. She will be joined in conversation by the co-founder of the project Care of Editions, artist Gerhard Schultz, to discuss their overlapping interests in the economies of distribution, both in relation to books and music.

Tickets are limited and advance book is suggested.

The 7th Nothing Else Press edition (and Lexier's second) is a cardstock envelope printed with a set of instructions for making a sculpture using the six letterpressed, glueless envelopes enclosed. Star and Hexagon versions are available, each in an edition of fifty copies.

Bio:

"Micah Lexier is a Toronto-based multimedia artist whose many-tiered practice includes sculpture, installation, photography and text-based work, as well as curation. Lexier graduated with an MFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1984. His practice is consonant with the sensibility of that institution, revolving largely around conceptual acts of enumeration and demarcation.  A well-known photographic work of Lexier’s, David: Then and Now (2005), reworks his Portrait of David (1994), spanning 10 years, and showing the effects of aging on 75 men named David, each a different age from one to 75. Lexier has had more than 100 solo exhibitions, participated in some 200 group exhibitions and produced numerous permanent public commissions. Recent publications include Call Ampersand Response, a collaborative bookwork made with Michael Dumontier, which was co-published by Artexte and Nieves in 2012, and I’m Thinking of A Number, a 30-year survey of Lexier’s ephemera, published by the Press of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 2010."

London Book Art Fair Presentation: AA Bronson

AA Bronson, founder of the NY Art Book Fair (running simultaneous to London this year, for some reason), founder of Art Metropole (with the other two members of General Idea), and former director of Printed Matter will discuss his life and work as an artist. Joined in conversation by Sam Ashby, founder of the queer 'zine, Little Joe, the pair will look at the history of publishing as a "democratic distribution of contemporary art", queer zines, community, and collaboration.

Titled AA Bronson: In Conversation, the event will be held at the Zilkha Auditorium, Whitechapel Gallery on Friday September 26th from 7 to 8:30pm. Tickets range from £2.50 to £5.00 and booking in advance is essential.

Bio:

Paul Butler (b. 1973, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada)

Considered multi-disciplinary, Butler’s practice is focused around community, collaboration and artist-run activity. Butler’s projects include: The Collage Party – touring studio made open to the public; Directing The Other Gallery – a nomadic commercial gallery; leading Reverse Pedagogy - an experimental residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts; and serving as the inaugural artist-in-residence at The Art Gallery of Ontario. He has exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; White Columns, New York City; Creative Growth Art Centre, Oakland; La Maison Rouge, Paris.  He has contributed writings to the book Decentre: Concerning Artist-run Culture and to Border Crossings and Canadian Art. Paul Butler is represented by Galerie Division Gallery in Montreal, QC and Toronto, ON, and Actual in Winnipeg, MB.

The second Nothing Else Press edition is the second passport photo by Glasgow-based artist David Shrigley. A few copies remain and it is still available at it's original price (despite appearing on Ebay for almost four times the price - see below).

Bio:

"David Shrigley is best known for his simple and direct drawings and animations that make satirical comments on everyday situations and human interactions. His work, which spans the last twenty years, holds significant public appeal and reveal the artist’s black humour, macabre intelligence and infinite jest. Since the early nineties, Shrigley has also produced a continuous flow of artist’s books.  Whilst drawing is at the centre of his practice the artist also works with photography, sculpture, animation, painting. Shrigley regularly has his cartoons published in publications such as The Guardian and New Statesman.

Shrigley was born in Macclesfield in 1968. Shrigley studied Fine Art in the Department of Environmental Art at Glasgow School of Art from 1988–91. Recent solo exhibitions include Signs, Anton Kern Gallery, New York (2013); Animations, Galleri Nicolai Wallner, Copenhagen (2012–13); How Are You Feeling?, Cornerhouse, Manchester, (2012–13); Brain Activity, Hayward Gallery, London (2012); Animate, Turku Art Museum, Finland (2011) Yvon Lambert, Paris (2011); and BQ, Berlin (2011). His numerous group exhibitions include The Roving Eye: Aura and the Contemporary Portrait, Oakland University Art Gallery, Michigan (2013); Homelands, British Council Touring Exhibition, travelling to Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Bengaluru (2013); and What are you like?, House of Illustration, Holburne Museum, Bath, (2012). The first edition we produced as The Nothing Else Press is the Toronto version of the brilliant Picture Postcard Posted From Postbox Pictured series. When a card is purchased we notify the artist, who signs and addresses the card from Berlin (ore more recently, Rome) and mails the postcard to us, in an envelope. We remove the envelope, affix postage and deliver the card to the buyer from the mailbox pictured on the front of the card. Which, incidentally, has since moved in the last 8 years and had to be tracked down a few blocks away.

Jonathan Monk was born in Leicester in 1969 and lives and works in Berlin/Rome. He has a BFA from Leicester Polytechnic (1988) and an MFA from Glasgow School of Art (1991). Solo exhibitions include Centro De Arte Contemporáneo (CAC) Málaga (2013), Kunstraum Dornbirn, Austria (2013), Palais de Tokyo and Musee d’Art Moderne, Paris (2008), Kunstverein Hannover (2006), Institute of Contemporary Art, London (2005) and Museum Kunst Palast, Dusseldorf (2003). His work has been included in many group exhibitions, including Whitney Biennial (2006), the 50th and 53rd Venice Biennales (2003, 2009), Berlin Biennale (2001) and Taipei Biennial (2000). He was awarded the Prix du Quartier Des Bains, Geneva in 2012.

Monk uses a wide range of media, including painting, installation, performance, photography and video. His practice engages with the notions of reproduction, copy and the multiple. Often revisiting seminal artworks from the 1960s and 70s, his work pays homage to Conceptual and Minimal art, at times with humorous irreverence, at others with poetic sentimentalism, incorporating autobiographical details alongside art historical references. By restaging these newly historicized works, Monk challenges the notions of authenticity, authorship and value that still inform many contemporary art practices despite the critical legacy of this conceptual tradition.
