A few weeks ago Toronto artist Jess Dobkin signed a year-long lease to operate a Gateway newsstand at Chester subway station. The artist-operated space will carry drinks and confectionary like a standard news agent, but will also sell artists' books, multiples and zines. Additionally, the space will host performances, screenings and other artist interventions. I'll be doing a couple of projects in the summer.
The original May 1st launch was cancelled at the last minute by the police. Apparently there was a robbery at gunpoint only a few feet away from the location of the stand (ground level, near the ticket collector booth). So investigations pre-empted the opening ceremonies. The new launch takes place tonight, 5 to 8pm.
