Jochen Lempert is a German artist, biologist and collector. His photographic work is about the world of nature and animals. In 2005 he was the winner of the Edwin Scharff Prize. He inherited a large collection of artist designed posters from his father fifteen years ago, which he continues to add to.
As part of Villa Toronto, Clarke has opened up his home, and his collection of artists’ books to Lempert, who has created a small domestic exhibition, coupling his own photographs with selections from the collection. The goal is an intuitive response whereby "the artistic strategy of inventory taking mirrors the subjectivity of art collecting."
The selected books include works by Ida Applebroog, John Baldessari, Marcel Broodthaers, Alexander Calder, Hanne Darboven, Adam Frelin, Gilbert and George, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Michael Snow, Derek Sullivan, Richard Tuttle, and Joyce Weiland.
The event is sponsored by Art Metropole, and continues until Friday January 23rd, 2015.
