Endre Tót
Correspondence with John Armleder
Geneva, Switzerland: Ecart Publications, 1974
84 pp., 29 x 21 cm., softcover
Edition of 500 numbered copies
Similar to Ray Johnson’s The Paper Snake (which collected mail art and correspondence sent to publisher Dick Higgins*) this catalogue in the form of an artists’ book gathers postcards and letters sent from Endre Tót to John Armleder.
Armleder had founded the Groupe Ecart with Patrick Lucchini and Claude Rychner five years prior. Tót was preparing for a solo exhibition at Ecart Gallery and sent a wide variety of typed and handwritten letters, altered postcards and other forms of mail art such as the one dozen rain pOstCarDs 1971–73, which were featured in the show.
Of the edition of five-hundred, fifty copies included an additional page with a unique rubber stamp design, signed by both artists.
* Ray Johnson described The Paper Snake as "all my writings, rubbings, plays, things that I had mailed to [Higgins] or brought to him in cardboard boxes or shoved under his door, or left in his sink, or whatever, over a period of years.”
