Sarah Lucas and Tracey Emin's Shop
Yesterday's Guardian has an account by Sarah Lucas and Tracey Emin about the shop they ran as an artwork in the early nineties, in the East End of London. They sold handmade t-shirts and buttons, and - famously - an ash tray with Damien Hirst's face on it. Prices ranged from 50p to 600 pounds, for an octopus sculpture they once sold to dealer Anthony D'Offay.
The project is typically discussed alongside artists retail projects like Claes Oldenburg's The Store, or George Brecht and Robert Filliou's Le Cedille, but whereas those two projects had books produced about them (both by the Something Else Press), finding information about The Shop has always been difficult. I think this is the longest account of it that I've read.
Check it out, here.
