On this day, twenty-one years ago, Ray Johnson was seen diving off a bridge in Sag Harbor, Long Island, and then backstroking out to sea in what some consider his final performance. Hundreds of collages were found carefully arranged in his home, seemingly filled with cryptic clues. His body washed up on the beach the next day.
