Laurie Anderson
Hearring
Zurich, Switzerland: Parkett Editions, 1997
10.2, x 4.5 x 2 cm
Earring with playable sound message (approx. 20 sec.), brass, copper, circuit board, loudspeaker, lithium battery, Plexiglas, wires
Edition of 150, with signed and numbered certificate.
Released in 1997 for $440, this edition remains available from the publisher, though the price has now more than doubled, to $900 US. A blog lists the work as being priced at $600 US in 2008. The same site reports that the sound clip is Anderson saying "Hey you, I'm right behind you", which is possibly a variation on the lyric from her song Coolsville - "and don't look now, I'm right behind you".
The jewelry is by Josiah Dearborn, and the 'engineering design' is by Bob Bielecki, who previously collaborated with Anderson on works such as her magnetic tape violin.
