Ruth and Marvin Sackner
The current issue of Apartemento Magazine (#15) contains an interview by artist Leah Singer with Ruth and Marvin Sackner, illustrated with photographs of the couple in their home, by Ryan Lowry. The Sackners' archive of books, critical texts, periodicals, ephemera, prints, drawings, collages, paintings, sculptures, objects, manuscripts, and correspondence relating to Concrete Poetry contains over 75,000 items.
The issue is on newsstands now. A brief excerpt below.
Marvin Sackner: In 1979 we went to Jaap Rietman's bookstore in New York; it was a great bookstore for avant-garde literature. On the top bookshelf, I pulled down a book by Emmett Williams, called An An Anthology of Concrete Poetry [Something Else Press, 1967, reissued by Primary Information, 2014]. I dusted it off and looked at it, and I said "Ruth, this is what we are collecting. It even has a name". I knew nothing about concrete poetry, zero!
Leah Singer: That must have been an incredible moment.
Marvin Sackner: An epiphany! I bought the entire bookshelf!
