Daniel Buren | A Partir De Là

Daniel Buren
A Partir De Là
Mönchengladbach, Germany: Städtisches Museum, 1975
[unpaginated], 20.5 × 16 cm., boxed
Edition of 660

For his solo exhibition at the Stadtisches Museum in late 1975, Buren researched the eight-year history of venue, dating from its opening on the former premises of a large private house in 1967. The artist applied material (white-and-blue stripes on the ground floor, white and red on the 2nd floor, white and brown on the staircase) directly to the walls. Buren then selected paintings from the museum's previous exhibitions and cut a section to scale from the material, exposing the bare wall behind. With the assistance of gallery director and curator Johannes Cladders, and photographic documentation, Buren was able to distinguish a consistent installation approach, deriving a composite pattern of rectangular voids.

The work represents one of Buren's many investigations into the conventions, framework and support of exhibiting artworks using his signature vertical stripe patterns.

The catalogue/artists' publication consists of two booklets and one loose sheet in a yellow card box. The contents includes maps and installation shots, with texts in both German and French. The loose sheet is printed with the show title, location and dates, and is numbered on the verso.
