K.Nicol | Carl Andre Quote

Last Thursday saw the opening of the exhibition Predisposed(...To Thinking Through The Eye Of Mutual Convenience), featuring several works by Hyang Cho and K. Nicol, as well as Joseph Beuys’ Intuition Box. The show runs until the 3rd of August, with a catalogue being produced before the show’s end.

At the opening, curator Ihor Holubizky was distributing a multiple version of one of Nicol’s works in the show. It consists of two hand-typed index cards in a manilla envelope, accompanied by two small nails.

The work riffs on a Carl Andre quote that itself borrows from Mark Rothko’s statement that “If a thing is worth doing once, it is worth doing over and over again – exploring it, probing it, demanding by its repetition that the public look at it.”

The exhibition checklist quotes Nicol: "I wanted to work with the Andre quote since I read it and I knew it would be a repetition piece with a bit of absurdity. It was with the limitations of a broken arm that led me to type the quote hundreds of times."
