OCADU 30th annual Book Arts Fair



On Saturday December 5th, OCAD University’s printmaking department presents the 30th annual Book Arts Fair in the Great Hall of OCAD University. Visitors are invited to browse handmade and crafted works by artists, printmakers, small publishers, students, papermakers and printmaking suppliers.

Numerous events have been scheduled around the sale, including workshops and lectures (Friday evening) by Roger Bywater and Miles Collyer, both previously with Art Metropole. Visit their website for details, but here is a quick run down of some of the events:

Non traditional Bookmaking with Recycled Material
Lead by Micheline Montgomery
Spots available: 12

Notebook/Sketchbook creations made with recycled material using simple binding and art techniques. Materials are free and include milk carton paper, tea bag paper, paper fodder for collage, markers, crayons, pastels, inks ,glue and your imagination.

Anyone from 10 to 110 is welcome.

As an artist Micheline makes the effort to choose methods and materials that respect the earth. In her collages she used materials that were found, recycled and re-used rather than bought. As well, she used water-based paints, acid free glue, cotton rag or stone paper. Micheline is constantly exploring new ways to 'green' her art.

Alternative Methods of Open-Spine Bookbinding

Alternate Methods of Open-Spine Bookbinding
This workshop will teach three beautiful, yet less commonly used techniques in open spine book-binding, using a step-by-step demonstration of retchoso, piano hinge and buttonhole binding. People with all levels of experience in bookbinding are welcome to join the workshop. Materials are provided.

Lani Burshtein is a third-year printmaking student at OCAD. Bookbinding, papercraft and embroidery are central to her interests. Her interest in sculpture also informs the creation of bookworks that incorporate pop-ups and alternative book structures.

This year, we are happy to introduce a new event as part of The Annual Book Arts Fair- TALK SHOP!

This reception is a chance to meet and mingle with members of the printmaking, book arts and multiples communities! TALK SHOP facilitates the opportunity to share and hear experiences of starting and supporting a variety of practices, businesses and studios, with the potential to make connections for future collaborations and/or the pooling of resources!

At 7 pm, we will have a short talk from Miles Collyer and Roger Bywater (bios below). They will share their stories both as key members in the history of Art Metropole, but also their rich and varied personal practices and experiences. This will act as an introduction for considerations for those either getting started and sustaining their own practice.

This event is open to all of those participating in The Annual Book Arts Fair as well as OCAD U Students, alumni as well as friends and any members of the art and design community.

Complimentary pizza and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided, as well as wine available for purchase.

BIOS

Miles Collyer is a visual artist and arts administrator who has received recognition for his work and his academic studies. Collyer was the recipient of a Gold Medal from the Canadian National Magazine Awards (2008), a SSHRC Graduate Scholarship (2013) and an Ontario Graduate Scholarship (2014). His work has been published and exhibited across Canada, the United States, Australia, Switzerland, Germany and several curated exhibits online. In 2016 his photographic and sculptural work will be presented in a solo exhibition at YYZ Artists’ Outlet, Toronto.

From 2005 to 2012 Miles held the position of Shop Manager at the nonprofit charitable centre Art Metropole where he had the opportunity to represent the organisation and the work of Canadian artists at many international art and book fairs. In 2012 Miles commenced a joint MBA (Arts & Media/Social Sector Management) and Masters of Fine Art degree at York University and the Schulich School of Business.

At present, Miles is the Career Development Coordinator at OCAD University’s Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers. In this role he develops and implements programs and services designed to enhance career direction, preparation and success for students and recent graduates. In addition, Miles serves as Vice-President on the Board of Mercer Union, a centre for contemporary art.


Roger Bywater holds a Masters of Fine Arts Degree from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax as well as a diploma in Sculpture from the Emily Carr College of Art and Design in Vancouver. Bywater has worked as a curator, dealer and publisher in the Canadian art scene for over 20 years. He was director/curator at Art Metropole, Toronto for an eight year period in the 1990s. During his time there he edited countless publications, ran their “Little Cockroach Press Series”, and organized numerous exhibitions by artists such as Hans-Peter Feldmann (DE), Martin Creed (UK), Rodney Graham (CA), and others.

In 2001 Bywater established Goodwater Gallery in Toronto with John Goodwin. This private gallery functioned as a project room to present solo exhibitions by emerging and senior artists who created work specifically for the gallery. During it’s run Goodwater presented exhibitions by: Kim Adams (CA), David Armstrong-Six (CA), Roderick Buchanan (UK), Moyra Davey (CA), and Mark Dion (US).

No longer associated with the gallery, which he left in 2005, Bywater continues to work independently with artists on a project-to-project basis through his imprint “Bywater Bros. Editions” which publishes artist’s books and editions. A selection of artists who have done projects with his press include: Mark Dion (US), Roe Ethridge (US), General Idea (CA), Tim Lee (CA), Annette Kelm (DE), Josephine Meckseper (DE), Jonathan Monk (UK), Jack Pierson (US), Richard Prince (US), David Shrigley (UK), Derek Sullivan (CA), Ron Terada (CA), Zin Taylor (CA), Karlheinz Weinberger (CH), Johannes Wohnseifer (DE), Jeremy Deller (UK), Rodney Graham (CA), Jens Haaning (DK), Garry Neill Kennedy (CA), Nestor Krüger (CA), Evan Penny (CA), Richard Prince (US), Steven Shearer (CA), and Shirley Wiitasalo (CA).
