In 1995, Leibowitz ordered a series of custom-made "designer" kippot from a supplier on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. A traditional symbol of Jewish observance, the yarmulkes become a canvas for the the artist to express a variety of social and political ideas from domestic politics to Holocaust remembrance to gay pride. Other examples include Kosher Hot Dog Yarmulke (Please Don't Forget Eleanor Roosevelt) and Swedish Yarmulke (Please Don't Forget Raoul Wallenberg).
