Joanne Stamerra
Erase Sexism at MoM
Self-published: New York City, 1976
2 x 5.7 x 1 cm
Edition size unknown
Joanne Stamerra, a sometime member of the Guerrilla Art Action Group (or GAAG - alongside Jon Hendricks, Jean Toche, Poppy Johnson and Virginia Toche), produced this work in response to two major bicentennial exhibitions: Drawing Now at MoMA and Twentieth-century American Drawing at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Stamerra felt the shows not only excluded women but had a "generational bias and a bias towards big commercial galleries".
The erasers were surreptiously placed throughout the Museum’s galleries, alongside other protests.
