My grandfather rode into World War 1 on a horse and next year we mark the centennial of that terrible war, and I have to admit it’s always had a kind of morbid fascination for me. This incredibly detailed 24ft accordion by Joe Sacco of the first day of the Battle of the Somme from the British side is an astounding panorama that documents the beginning of the horrors that would befall the soldiers from all three sides in the fighting (British, French & German). The book comes with an accompanying booklet with a historical essay by Adam Hochschild and annotations of the work by Sacco himself.
