Richard Edson | Movie Life

Richard Edson
Movie Life
Bywater Bros. Editions, 2019
120 pp, 16 x 24.7 cm., softcover
Edition size unknown

Richard Edson was the original drummer for Sonic Youth, from 1981 to 1982. After the release of their self titled debut, he left the band to play with Konk, who remained active as part of New York’s post-punk dance scene until 1988, playing alongside bands such as Liquid Liquid, Bush Tetras, ESG, and John Lurie's Lounge Lizards.

Filmmaker Jim Jarmusch cast Edson and Lurie in his second film, Stranger Than Paradise (1984), a low budget indie that went on to win the Camera d'Or at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival as well as the 1985 National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Film. Since then Edson has appeared in over 100 films, including Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing, Wim Wenders' The Million Dollar Hotel, Oliver Stone's Platoon, and Alex Cox’s Walker.

Edited by Edson and publisher Roger Bywater, Movie Life is an inside portrait of the film industry by the veteran character actor. The black and white photographs were taken over a period of 30 years and feature portraits of famous friends and colleagues such as Willem Dafoe, Steve Buscemi, Edie Falco, Dee Dee Ramone, Ed Harris, Laurie Metcalf, Holly Hunter and John Sayles. The book features images of film production, location shoots, press junkets and promotional interviews.

“Becoming an actor was a good excuse to take photographs. The places I was went, the people I met, plus being involved in the whole machinery of film making was a subject that was too great to pass up.”
- Richard Edson, epilogue

Available for $35 from the publisher, here.

The New York Artists’ Memorial Garden

In late April, the Art Production Fund and White Columns launched a joint venture called “The New York Artists’ Memorial Garden”, featuring benches by Laurie Anderson, Judith Bernstein, Barbara Bloom, Rafael Ferrer, John Giorno, Hans Haacke, Joan Jonas, Alex Katz, Glenn Ligon, Zoe Leonard, Jonas Mekas, Meredith Monk, Yoko Ono, Elizabeth Peyton, Jack Pierson, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Lawrence Weiner and others.

Based on a curatorial initiative of Matthew Higgs, “The New York Artists’ Memorial Garden” is an extension of an existing NYC Parks “Adopt-A-Bench” program, which allows individuals to create a personal memorial for a loved one in a public space. Thirty-four New York- based artists were invited to dedicate a park bench to a person – or an entity – of their choosing.

The subjects of the dedications include author and activist James Baldwin, filmmaker Maya Deren, musician Alice Coltrane and art historian Linda Nochlin. Martha Rosler dedicated hers to David Antin, whom she describes as "Poet, mentor, friend, foe".

The benches are located in Jackson Square Park, open from 6am to 1am daily, and on view for the next ten years.

Frederic Lieberman | Divertevents One

Frederic Lieberman
Divertevents One
New York City, USA: Fluxus, 1968
10.2 × 12 × 1 cm.
Edition size unknown

Plastic box containing ten offset cards, featuring nine 'connect the dots' games, most of which reveal a straight line or simple geometric shape. The tenth card is George Maciunas' "name card" for Lieberman, who only produced this single multiple for Fluxus.

According to Jon Hendricks' Fluxus Codex, the work was never offered as an individual work, but was instead included in the collective work Flux Year Box 2, typically in a manilla envelope. It is unclear if the plastic box versions are only the Reflux versions produced by Barbara Moore after Maciunas' death.
